Thinking of Adopting a Cat or Kitten?
Here are 10 things you'll absolutely need!

Congratulations on adopting a new kitty cat! As you prepare to bring your furry bundle of joy home, it’s important to have all the basics ready to go, but maybe you’re not sure where to start? No worries, Texas Ruff House has you covered!

Here are 10 essential supplies to consider as you take your first steps.

1. Food and water bowls Get a set of sturdy, non-toxic bowls that won't tip over easily. Cats are particular about having clean water so make sure whatever water bowl you use has higher sides to prevent food and other items from getting in it. If your budget allows a little extra wiggle room, get a flowing water fountain for your cat. They love to lap it up from the stream, and the water stays fresher longer, which they also love.

2. High-quality cat food Choose a brand that meets the nutritional needs of your cat and is appropriate for their age and health. If you're in the North Austin, TX area, Pupology in Georgetown has many brands to choose from and can help you decide what is right for you! Ordering online from your Amazon account is time efficient. Here are some brands approved by the WSAVA: Purina Pro Plan dry or canned, and Iams dry or canned.

3. Litter box and litter Get a litter box that's large enough for your cat to comfortably use and litter that's appropriate for your cat's age. If you decide to adopt two cats, the rule of thumb with multiple kitties is one litter box per cat, plus 1. There are many different types of litter, from how it clumps together, to how it smells, so experiment to discover which one you like best. Many cat parents enjoy the ease of this affordable self-scooping litter box.

4. Cat bed Provide your cat with a comfortable place to sleep. Some favorites include the donut bed, cat cave, or a heated bed (our senior cats love this one)

5. Scratching post Cats need to scratch to keep their claws healthy, so get a scratching post to protect your furniture. Variety will be your saving grace. At least, it will help save your furniture! Cats are "choosy". Start with a couple sturdy ones like this post, then add a new one every couple of month to rotate through the rooms. A cat tree will double the fun of climbing and scratching. Don't forget to add on a few cardboard scratchers too.

6. Toys Cats LOVE to play, so get some toys to keep them entertained and mentally stimulated. Our professional cat sitters carry this bundle in their tool kit and all of our cat clients love it. It's important to feed your cat's natural instinct of hunting, pouncing, batting, and trapping. And that's why cat toys are so important for the mental health and development of your cat.

7. Brush and grooming supplies Depending on the type of cat you have, you may need a brush, nail clippers, or other grooming supplies. However, we cannot stress the importance of using a comb instead of the brush. Only a comb will prevent painful mats from forming in the undercoat. We highly recommend keeping your cat’s nails trimmed (this cuts down on the amount of possible destruction they can create over time). Here’s a video that shows you how to trim your cat’s nails by yourself and without getting scratched. Don't forget to have pet wipes for daily cleaning of eyes and ears.

8. Carrier A secure carrier is necessary for taking your cat to the vet or on trips. We recommend the type that has a lid on TOP of the carrier, as shown in the photo. It makes getting them in and out a breeze! We also recommend lining it with a pad or towel for possible accidents and comfort. When you bring home your new cat, leave the carrier opened up in the living room. Spend a few minutes each day playing inside the carrier. Toss a yummy treat in there for your cat to find. This will build positive associations with the cat carrier.

9. ID tag and collar Make sure your cat has an ID tag and collar with your contact information in case they get lost. You can choose a collar with a bell or without.

10. Cleaning supplies Accidents happen, so make sure you have cleaning supplies on hand to clean up any messes.

With a well-prepared home, your kitty will adjust faster, and soon you'll have a purring, content best friend to play with and love. Picking a trusted vet is also vital so you can get those vaccinations completed. But choosing who to care for your cat when you eventually go out of town is the easy part with Texas Ruff House!

Congratulations on your newest family member, we can’t wait to meet them!
