How do I stop my dog from pulling on the leash?

How do I stop my dog from pulling?

Love taking your fur baby on a walk? We do, too, but not so much when they pull. Pulling can harm your dog’s neck, gait, and not to mention it can hurt you as well. Poor leash handling can result in back pain, arm injuries, or aching knees.
The worst part is, it may even reduce the amount of walks your dog receives. That's why leash training is so important, especially if your dog pulls or reacts while on the leash during your walks.
Want to learn what we teach our Texas Ruff House pet sitters and dog walkers? Here are some of our pro tips to help you teach your dog to walk on a leash without pulling!

Start with the right equipment A sturdy, non-retractable leash and a properly fittied collar or harness are essential for effective leash training.
Obedience basics Your dog should know basic commands like "sit" before you start leash training. We also may work with a cue signal that directs the dog to check in with you throughout the walk. This can be a simple as a "kissy sound", or using words like "Right here", and pointing to your eye.

Start small Begin training in a low-distraction environment, such as your backyard or a quiet park. Gradually increase the level of distraction as your dog becomes more comfortable on the leash. This is where we start all puppies and dogs who needing basic training.

Use positive reinforcement (Pro Tip!) Reward your dog with treats and praise when they walk calmly on the leash without pulling. Avoid using punishment or physical force to correct your dog's behavior.

Use the “Stop and Go” method When your dog starts to pull on the leash, stop walking and wait for them to calm down. Then start walking again. This will teach your dog that pulling won't get them where they want to go.

Use the “U-turn” method When your dog starts to pull, turn around and walk in the opposite direction. This confusion will teach your dog that pulling will take them further away from where they want to go.

Be patient and consistent. Leash training takes time and practice! Stick to a regular routine and be consistent with your training methods.

Remember that leash training is a process, and it may take some time for your dog to learn how to walk calmly on a leash. If you are not as successful as you want with your dog, or if your dog struggles with reacting to dogs, people, or cars while walking, then our trained Texas Ruff House dog walkers can train your dog for you so you can enjoy a stress-free stroll together.
With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, you can teach your dog to walk without pulling!
