How You Can Get Involved with Animal Rescues Besides Adopting or Fostering

As pet parents and pet care providers, it’s only natural that we have compassion for animals in need. There are thousands of animal welfare organizations in the United States alone, and millions of dogs and cats that need help each year. The numbers may be overwhelming, but every minute volunteered, dollar donated, and effort contributed makes a difference. Because it’s not always obvious how to get started, our team of pet sitters and dog walkers at Texas Ruff House made a list of easy ways you can get involved with local shelters and nonprofits.

1. Fundraiser Events

Rescues operate based on the generosity of donors. To raise funds, rescues organize events for paid admission. Your ticket fee helps cover animal care costs such as critical medical bills, food, essential supplies, and shelter; as well as programs like spay/neuter clinics, vaccinations, and training. The next time you see an upcoming animal charity event, consider attending or at least supporting with a donation.

2. Volunteering

Shelters are always in need of volunteers with time, experience, and/or skills. There is a lot of work to be done at shelters such as walking dogs, or administrative work like processing adoption and foster applications, or helping spread awareness through social media marketing. You can reach out directly and inquire what roles shelters are looking to fill based on your availability and skill set.

3. Donating Supplies

If you have a pet at home, chances are you’ve accumulated some gently used items in your house that your pet doesn’t need anymore. Shelters and foster homes are always in need of food, supplies, and toys. Consider dropping these items off at your local shelter or rescue, they’ll be so grateful!

4. Raising Money

Social media makes it very easy these days to raise money for a good cause. You can set up an online fundraiser on your Facebook or Instagram account for free, and these platforms pay all the processing fees, so 100% of the money donated by your family, friends, and followers goes directly to the nonprofit of your choice.

5. Raising awareness

Speaking of social media, showing support for your favorite animal welfare organization by following, engaging with them, and re-sharing their content with your followers is just about the easiest and most cost-effective thing you can do!

Those are just 5 easy ways to get involved with animal rescues. Now the question is where to start?

Looking to Foster or Adopt?

If you do have the time to commit to fostering an animal and are serious about it, you would be doing a tremendous service – for the animal you bring into your home by enabling them to have the time they need to become ready for adoption – and for the organization too, as they largely rely on foster providers to take in animals and free up spots in shelters in order for them to be able to continue to help more animals.

Adoption is the ultimate gift and is not taken lightly by animal rescues. The adoption process can be rigorous because rescues prioritize putting animals into the right homes above all else. But if you have been thinking of getting a pet, consider adopting and giving an animal a second chance at a forever home! The organizations listed above could use your support and have animals in need of homes.
